2007 RESULTS
The Colorado Relay began in 1998 with only 7 teams tackling the 170-mile, 24-hour race course. Since then, the number of participating teams has grown exponentially and course records are continually broken every September.
Avid runner and former Colorado Outward Bound School Development Director, Tony Lewis, brought the idea of organizing a relay through the Colorado Rockies after being intrigued by other races of the same origin in areas around the nation.
The concept of runners working together for a common goal, while realizing that the challenges and accomplishments along the way may show them a hint of what is possible emulated what Outward Bound stands for. At Outward Bound Wilderness, we impel our students into activities that enhance their individual character, develop confidence and make explicit their limitless potential and the Colorado Relay also does exactly that.
With the Relay concept in hand, Susan Bruton, the first Colorado Relay Race Director, headed into the Rockies with several maps and began laying out the race course. Through exploring many winding roads, bike paths and trails she confirmed the race course that we continue to use today. Trish Gumina took on the Relay and grew it over her two years of work and has since passed the baton off to Kate Borgelt who handed it off to Kim Wysocki. Race Director Garret Ball has worked on the Relay for 4 years and has Race experience with 4 Eco-Challenges as well as other Adventure Races.
Many teams have returned year after year and have grown with us since the Colorado Relay's inception. Between Colorado Relay alumni and new runners looking for a challenge, the race is only going to continue to grow. We invite you to share in its magic, test your limits and join us for an unmatchable race in September!
